Beto for Texas fell short of Ted Cruz by 2.5%. Yesterday, Beto O’rourke launched his 2020 Presidential campaign at a series of locations in Texas. We hosted a watch party on the Meso Fusion Media Facebook page. Below are some of the points I took away from the speech.
The war on drugs.
This has been a big issue for me. I don’t use drugs, nor do I intend to. However the war on drugs has given rise to the abusive law enforcement tactics we see today. Meanwhile, it has failed miserably. It’s time to end it.
Mental health for veterans.
I’m big on this issue as well. As a Marine veteran, it pains me to see the number of homeless veterans we have. They have long waits for healthcare. Furthermore, mental health issues are often undiagnosed and untreated.
Let our differences not define us or divide us.
We are Americans first. In his Senate campaign, Beto went to deep red counties and faced the often hostile voters. We need a President who reaches out to the other side.
Universal care where every woman makes her own decisions for her own body.
Beto is clearly pro life. He did, however, stop short of signing on to Medicare For All. I’m interested in hearing more from him on this.
Debt free higher education.
His plan sounds similar to what we currently have in Tennessee. Free community college. He didn’t elaborate on how he would make colleges “debt free”.
End cash bail and for profit prisons.
This goes hand in hand with ending the war on drugs.
Comprehensive immigration reform.
Beto said we need to “rewrite our immigration laws in our own image”. He called for protecting DACA kids and streamlining the immigration process. I’m in.
A roof over the head of every single veteran who is sleeping in the streets.
Better healthcare and housing. Again, short on details.
End these love affairs with dictators and strongmen.
This was a clear shot at President Trump. Moreover, he’s right. We need a President who will stand up to Putin and doesn’t “fall in love” with Kim.
A new voting rights act.
End Gerrymandering and begin same day registration? Where do I sign up? I was impressed to hear a candidate actually address Gerrymandering. Let’s hope he’s serious about it.
Beto O’Rourke For America 2020.
Beto O’Rourke still needs to give us details on his plans. However, yesterday’s setting wasn’t the place. Furthermore, I expect him to do some Townhall meetings soon where he can get into policy discussions. Meanwhile, I like his positions. Now we just need to see how he intends to implement them. So far, he’s the frontrunner for me.
