In case you’ve slept through the last 3 and 1/2 years, the GOP wanted to be sure you got the memo on precisely how inept President Trump is. They didn’t have to use fake news to do it either. President Trump’s inability to lead has extended to the GOP 2020 platform, as talks have broken down on writing a new one. Hence, in typical regressive fashion, they chose to recycle the 2016 platform. Unfortunately for the President, it includes the following true but unflattering language.
It also slams “the current Administration” for a ballooning national debt that “has placed a significant burden on future generation.”2016 GOP Platform
Moreover, they didn’t have a new trick to explain the old platform resurfacing. RNC national press secretary Mandi Merritt actually blamed the Democrats for the failure of Republicans to come up with a new platform. Speaking of North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, she said the following.
His refusal to work with the RNC on holding a full event in his state left our members with no choice. It would not be right for a very small group to craft a new platform without all of the delegates present,Mandi Merritt
Many GOP insiders were frustrated by this shortcoming. However, President Trump doesn’t seem to mind it much. He took to Twitter, first appearing to call for a vote on the 2016 platform. Then he tweeted the following.
Trump Be Tweetin’
Definitely short, so he can read it. Perhaps a few bullet points. Maybe a couple of pictures. Cap it off with a few raunchy insults and derogatory nicknames, and call it a platform.
The GOP 2020 Platform debacle highlights the ineptitude of President Trump.
Terry Schilling, executive director of American Principles Project said that this will “run the risk of having a stale platform” and called it “tone deaf”. However, I would like to point out that allowing Republicans to draw up a new platform doesn’t significantly decrease the odds of that happening.
In the end, I’m happy that the GOP inadvertantly found a way to be honest about this administration for once. President Trump added $3 trillion in debt in his first 3 years. Thus, it’s only fair that the 2020 GOP platform address the significant burden that the current administration has placed on a future generation. However, they may still have time to change this, so stay tuned.
