Mail In Ballots and Voter Fraud

Due to COVID-19 fears, many Democrats are pushing for mail in voting in the 2020 election. However, Republicans oppose mail in ballots. They say that these ballots are highly susceptible to voter fraud. Take, for example, the case of Steven Curtis.

Steven was going through a divorce. His wife’s absentee ballot was sent to his house. Hence, he took the opportunity to fill it out for her. He was caught, prosecuted, and sentenced to community service for this action. This is a fact. Democrats can’t deny it. It is not fake news. Moreover, it does happen from time to time. As a Republican talk show host in Denver once said…

“It seems to me, and correct me if I’m wrong, but virtually every case of voter fraud I can remember in my lifetime was committed by Democrats,”

Who was that talk show host? Well, it was Steven Curtis. Yes, the same Steven Curtis discussed above. Former Colorado GOP Chairman Steven Curtis. Convicted fraudulent voter Steven Curtis.

Mail in ballots and voter fraud.

Do mail in ballots lead to voter fraud?

They can indeed. Another example is 88 year old Audrey Cook, a Republican election judge from Alton Illinois. However, her case was much more sympathetic. She described it as follows.

“My husband was very sick, and we applied for absentee ballots for both of us,” she said. “We got them a couple of days after he died, and I knew how he wanted to vote.”

However, mail in ballots aren’t the only way to game the system. Hence the case of Terri Lynn Rote, a 55 year old Iowa Republican who voted early, then on election day voted often. When asked to explain her actions she said the following.

“I wasn’t planning on doing it twice; it was a spur-of-the-moment [decision]. The polls are rigged.”

Yes, even when rigging the polls, Republicans accuse the polls of being rigged. Which was, in this case at least, true. Because she rigged them.

Moreover, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the North Carolina GOP voter fraud debacle. This one also included absentee ballots. Hence, furthering the case against mail in ballots. However, the case should be summed up like this.

Mail in ballots are dangerous because Republicans can’t resist cheating with them.

That said, I’ll take my chances. Why? Because there is an important point to be made here. The system works. Hence, we know about these cases because the perpetrators got caught.

Mail in ballots will play a role in the 2020 election. What Republicans are really saying is that they want to be able to keep perpetrating their fraud, while closing the chance for others to get in on it. I reject that argument.

Yes, there will be voter fraud in 2020. There always is. However, these cases will be few and isolated examples. They always are. Moreover, the perpetrators will get caught and punished. They usually do. This is not evidence that our system fails. It is evidence that it works.
