The Tara Reade saga is getting interesting, albeit confusing. A story broke today that goes a long way towards giving her some much needed credibility in her accusations. I’ve been highly suspicious of her story until now. However, I’m starting to reconsider. Part of the problem here is the damage that she’s done to her own credibility. Here is how the Tara Reade story originally broke.
“He used to put his hand on my shoulder and run his finger up my neck,” Reade said. “I would just kind of freeze and wait for him to stop doing that.”The Union
She went on to say that he wanted her to serve drinks at a party because she had nice legs. Pretty mundane story, and consistent with other women’s accounts of awkward interactions with Biden. Moreover, she stated that her accusations weren’t sexual in nature.
Reade said she didn’t consider the acts toward her sexualization. She instead compared her experience to being a lamp. The Union
“It’s pretty. Set it over there,” she said. “Then when it’s too bright, you throw it away.”
The Brother of Tara Reade speaks out.
That is a much different story than the one she is telling now. However, the stories aren’t contradictory. Both could be true. But it makes one wonder why she withheld the bigger story originally. Furthermore, her brother’s version of events followed the same trajectory.
The Washington Post also spoke with Tara Reade’s brother who initially told The Post, “I heard that there was a gym bag incident….and that he was inappropriate. I remember her telling me he said she was nothing to him.” Now interestingly, several days later, according to The Post, Tara Reade’s brother got back in touch with the paper and said he did remember her saying that Biden had put his hands under her clothes.News Busters
First, he only remembers a gym bag and words. Later he remembers hands. Odd, right? Sounds suspicious. However, it gets even stranger when Tara’s late mother enters the mix, bringing Larry King along for the ride.
Larry King enters the ring.
An unidentified woman called Larry King in 1993, saying the following.
“Yes, hello. I’m wondering what a staffer would do besides go to the press in Washington?” she asks. “My daughter has just left there after working for a prominent senator, and could not get through with her problems at all, and the only thing she could have done was go to the press, and she chose not to do it out of respect for him.”CNN
This is an improvement. However, it is still problematic for the following reasons.
- She doesn’t identify herself. However, she is from the town where Reade’s mother lived.
- She doesn’t identify the perpetrator. However, she does say a prominent Senator. Joe Biden would fit that bill.
- She doesn’t identify the type of problem. However, it is the same year that Reade claims the incident occurred.
See the problem?
If Tara Reade had told the same story from day 1, this would be huge. However, this call could fit either version of events, since the caller didn’t elaborate. Thus, all I can conclude is that something happened and she told someone. Until now.
Tara Reade gets a much needed jolt of credibility.
Enter Tara Reade’s old neighbor. Lynda LaCasse lived in the same apartments with Tara shortly after the incident allegedly occurred. Moreover, she’s a Biden supporter. Hence, no reason to lie. Here’s what she had to say.
“I remember her saying, here was this person that she was working for and she idolized him,” LaCasse said. “And he kind of put her up against a wall. And he put his hand up her skirt and he put his fingers inside her. She felt like she was assaulted, and she really didn’t feel there was anything she could do.”Business Insider
That, my friends, is compelling. You can’t get around that. Furthermore, she went on to say “This happened, and I know it did because I remember talking about it.” Very credible. Very compelling. This leaves only one option for Biden defenders. They can accuse her of lying about it 30 years ago. Outside of that, what defense is there?
Unfortunately for Republicans, their guy has dozens of these allegations on him, so it’s pretty tough to see how they can capitalize on this. Unless, of course, more of these accusations come out. Furthermore, they are already on the record as saying 30 year old allegations aren’t relevant today. Remember Kavanaugh? Moreover, I made a similar observation at the time.
What’s important here is that Tara got to tell her story. She wasn’t attacked by Biden or her campaign. Furthermore, she wasn’t harrassed or threatened with lawsuits. Hopefully that doesn’t change.
This is damaging to Biden’s reputation, but he can survive this assuming two things. First, this is the only story of it’s kind. Second, that he maintains the high road. There are two sides to every story. Tara Reade has gained credibility now, but that still doesn’t prove her case. It simply makes Biden’s handling of it that much more critical. If he goes on the warpath, it will be very tough to support him.
