The Transformation of Julian Assange

London Police arrest Julian Assange.

Last week, London Police went into the Ecuadorian Embassy and arrested Julian Assange on a warrant from the United States. The warrant details the complaints against the Wikileaks founder. They stem back to his work with Chelsea Manning back in March of 2010. This particular quote from page 4 of the warrant caught my attention. It is perfectly in line with the first opinion that many on the right had of the man. The transformation of Julian Assange has now come full circle.

(A) to knowingly access a computer, without authorization and exceeding authorized access, to obtain information that has been determined by the United States Government pursuant to an Executive order and statute to require protection against unauthorized disclosure for reasons of national defense and foreign relations, namely, documents relating to the national defense classified up to the “Secret” level, with reason to believe that such information so obtained could be used to the injury of the United States and the advantage of any foreign nation, and to willfully communicate, deliver, transmit, and cause to be communicated, delivered, or transmitted the same, to any person not entitled to receive it,

Where it all started going wrong.

The starting point before the transformation of Julian Assange.

It is important to remember that Barrack Obama was President of the United States in 2010. Thus, right wing pundits were given an easy target. Not only could they attack a man who was releasing classified information to the world, they could attack the Democrat President for allowing it to happen. Furthermore, at that time Donald Trump was merely a reality tv star who dabbled in political rhetoric. Here is what he had to say about Manning and Assange at that time.

“I think it’s disgraceful, I think there should be like death penalty or something,”

However, in the 2016 campaign WikiLeaks started releasing Democrat’s emails. Suddenly, then Candidate Trump’s opinion on Assange drastically changed. The following quotes are both from Donald Trump in 2016.

  • October 10th: “This just came out,” Trump said. “WikiLeaks, I love WikiLeaks.”
  • November 4th: “Getting off the plane, they were just announcing new WikiLeaks, and I wanted to stay there, but I didn’t want to keep you waiting,” said Trump. “Boy, I love reading those WikiLeaks.”

Now that his justice department has revealed this warrant for the arrest of Assange, President Trump has once again changed his tune. “I know nothing about WikiLeaks”, he told the press on Friday.

“It’s not my thing. I know there is something having to do with Julian Assange. I’ve been seeing what’s happened with Assange and that will be a determination, I would imagine, mostly by the attorney general, who’s doing an excellent job. So, he’ll be making a determination . I know nothing really about him.”

Hannity on Assange then and now.

President Trump isn’t alone in this transformation. Back in 2010, Sean Hannity said that Assange was “waging his war against the United States” and asked the following question of then President Obama.

Why can’t Obama do something about the WikiLeaks? We got this four months ago. You know, we can stop pirating a music and Hollywood movies, but we can’t stop this guy from stealing highly classified documents that puts people’s lives at risk?

The Transformation of Julian Assange in the eyes of Sean Hannity was less abrupt. However, it wan no less thorough. Sean eased into the change in 2016. By 2017, the transformation was complete. Consider these quotes.

  • Summer of 2016: “Part of me, in the beginning, was conflicted about you,”
  • January of 2017: “I believe every word he says, to be perfectly honest.”

What we have learned from the transformation of Julian Assange.

President Trump called for the death penalty for Assange when Obama was President. However, he “loved WikiLeaks” when they were helping him. Now, he knows nothing about them.

Hannity believed Assange to be “waging a war against the U.S.” when Obama was President. However, he “was conflicted about” Assange when he was helping Trump.

I’m sure both President Trump and Sean Hannity will be 100% behind the prosecution of Assange. This is not patriotism. It’s the completion of their transformation of Julian Assange. Enemy when he was a stick with which to beat Obama. Friend when he was opposing Hillary. Cyber terrorist when he has outlived his usefulness.

This isn’t America first. It’s Trump first. They were both willing to side with the enemies of America in order to win an election. I was tough on President Obama for being friends with domestic terrorist William Ayers. His pardoning of Chelsea Manning was one of the biggest disgraces of his Presidency. Thus, I cannot abide President Trump acting in the same manner. He aligned himself with an enemy of the people to win a personal victory. This President does not have the best interest of the country at heart.

  1. “This isn’t America first. It’s Trump first.” — Great line. Succinct.

They were against Assange before they were for him and now they’ll be cheering when he gets hung from a yardarm.

I was for him 100 percent as far as the 1st Amendment goes and still am, but the 1st Amendment doesn’t cover hacking government computers, suborning that or helping with it. That’s criminal activity, not protected speech.

Yeah, hang him from a yardarm.
