The Mueller Report is in. Well, not for us. However it has been turned in to the Attorney General. Thus, AG Barr has released his summary. I’ve said from day one that I trust Mueller and I will accept his findings. It appears that he found no proof of conspiracy by the Trump Campaign with Russia. Good for the President, good for the nation. I accept that. What if the Democrats, however, act like President Trump?
First, consider this…
There’s a little irony here that isn’t lost on me. This whole investigation got started when President Trump fired FBI director James Comey. Trump justified this citing Comey’s handling of the Hillary email investigation. Here’s an excerpt from the letter Rod Rosenstein wrote.
Follow me here. DOJ policy is that a sitting President can’t be indicted. Therefore, it is not the function of AG Barr to file charges against the President. Thus, William Barr should have completed his report and turned it over for Congress for consideration for impeachment. They are after all the convening authority. By telling the country that the President couldn’t be exonerated of obstruction charges without filing them, he did to Trump exactly what Comey did to Hillary. I digress.
What if the Democrats act like President Trump on investigations of their opponent?
Remember when Hillary Clinton was investigated for her email server? She couldn’t be criminally charged. However, she couldn’t be exonerated. President Trump and his supporters have spent the time since chanting “lock her up”. What if the Democrats mimic this behavior?
Suddenly, Trump supporters might not be too keen on the idea of locking up your political opponent after an investigation finds the evidence lacking. I don’t expect Republicans to extend this courtesy to Hillary. Moreover, I’m not confident that Democrats will avoid this pitfall either with President Trump.
There’s an intoxicating appeal to this type of childish behavior. I don’t like that person. Therefore, I reject any evidence that exonerates them and accept any that indicts them. This is bad for the country. Moreover, it is bad for justice. Thus, I disagree with the Democrats on releasing the Mueller report.
It should be given to Congress. However, assuming they chose not to pursue impeachment, it should not be given to the public. If the President isn’t charged, it is unfair to dump his dirty laundry into the public eye. It pains me to say that. I would love to see what was found. However, I first want to see fairness. Hillary Clinton was severely damaged politically by the unfair treatment she received. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
What if the Democrats put country over party?
I realize the impact of what I am saying. President Trump would never do that. That is precisely why the Democrats should do it. Someone has to do the right thing here. If they act like him to beat him, they are no better than he. They would feel great for a moment by using the dirty trick against him that he exploited against Hillary. However, they would feel better longer by doing the right thing.
President Trump can be beaten on the issues. Moreover, if he can’t be then we shouldn’t want him to lose. If Democrats have to get in the mud to win, they shouldn’t. I’m fine with the standard political gamesmanship. However, we have to draw the line somewhere. Let’s draw it at law and order. We should defend privacy and individual rights. What if Democrats chose to do so now? They would have my respect. Unfortunately, they would also shock me. I hope they do.
