Remember Benghazi. There was an attack on our embassy that resulted in the death of Ambassador Stevens and others. Hillary Clinton, then Secretary of State, received much criticism for lack of action at that time. Today, our embassy in Iraq is under siege. I found this information from the State Department to be interesting. Moreover, it caused me to question who is responsible for embassy security.
“Both Abdul-Mahdi and Salih assured the Secretary that they took seriously their responsibility for and would guarantee the safety and security of US personnel and property,” State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said.
It’s not just the State Department that sees Iraq as having responsibility for defending the embassy. Here’s the President of the United States.
Trump be Tweetin’
However, when Obama was President he saw responsibility for embassy security falling elsewhere.
After Secretary Clinton’s failed intervention in Libya, Islamic terrorists in Benghazi took down our consulate and killed our ambassador and three brave Americans. Then, instead of taking charge that night, Hillary Clinton decided to go home and sleep! Incredible.
So who is responsible for embassy security?
Clearly the State Department plays some role. Likewise the President. However, it is interesting to see this change of rhetoric on the right. If there were hearings into this fiasco in Iraq, would they have the audacity to subpoena Iraqis to testify at the hearings? Who knows? Audacity is one thing this administration is never short on.
Ultimately, the administration does bear responsibility for embassy security. Furthermore, it would be unfair to attack President Trump for what is happening in Iraq. You know, like he did to Hillary Clinton. However, it is interesting to see them looking to Iraq to provide security now that they are in the hot seat. I’m not saying he’s wrong. Iraq is an ally. This is happening in their country. Moreover, they should help. I’m merely pointing out their hypocrisy.
